Educational Program

Celestial navigation and SPICE software (In English)

A 5-hour workshop will be held for students of the UNLP (focused on astronomy and aerospace engineering) and extended to other interested students.

The first part will introduce the history and techniques of celestial navigation, led by Susan Stewart (SOC member), Chief of the US Nautical Almanac Office. Participants will learn practical techniques for orientation and taking sites of planets and bright stars. Then, we will focus on the NAIF SPICE toolkit developed by NASA JPL. This software provides tools and routines for handling various types of observational geometry information. The class will be led by Boris Semenov (NAIF Group Supervisor) and other experts in the field.

The materialization of astronomical reference systems in primary and secondary Argentine education levels (In Spanish)

A 5-hour workshop will be held for high school physics, geography, natural sciences, and technology teachers. The activity will focus on materializing the reference coordinate systems in the form of naked-eye observations in everyday teaching practice. This activity is free of charge and will be held at Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas (http://www.fcaglp.unlp.edu.ar)

It will be led by Néstor Camino, Maria Silvina De Biasi (LOC member), and Mariela Corti, all Ph.D.s in Astronomy and members of the National Astronomy Education Coordinator (NAEC) team for Argentina at IAU OAE (Office of Astronomy for Education). N. Camino is the former chair of Argentina’s NAEC team.

Registration will be from July 1st to August 4th by email to naec.argentina at gmail.com.
